Gifts For Art Lovers, Inspired By The Met Collection.
Though He’S Since Been Largely Forgotten, Gerard De Lairesse (Dutch, 1641–1711) Was Celebrated During His Lifetime For His Idealizing Manner Of Painting Derived From The Study Of Antiquity. Apollo And Aurora (1671), Which Was Likely Destined For Display Over A Mantelpiece In A Grand Amsterdam Home, Depicts The Sun God With The Goddess Of The Dawn, Which Was A Popular Subject In Both French And Italian Art. The Highly Individualized Features Of The Couple Have Led To Speculation That This Painting May Have Been A Wedding Portrait Of Two Young Newlyweds.
